Hello!
This week I wanted to share with you my nighttime skincare routine! A few posts back, I shared with you my quick morning skincare routine. My nighttime routine takes a little longer (which drives my husband crazy), because there are a few more steps. It is important to add a few more products before you go to bed, because your skin absorbs the best while you are sleeping. Which is why nighttime face creams are a thicker consistency, it is more difficult for your skin to absorb these products in the morning and throughout the day.
The first step is to remove your makeup. If you did not wear makeup for the day you can skip to step two! I used to skip this step, thinking my cleanser would take care of it. Removing your makeup first lets your next cleanse penetrate deeper into your pores. I use the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water with a cotton pad to remove makeup and oils, without drying out my skin. This is the first step in a double cleanse. This micellar water is very affordable, and you get a huge bottle!
Step two is to cleanse your skin. Cleansing your skin gets rid of the rest of the dirt, oil, and impurities you didn’t get with your first cleanse. I use the CeraVe Renewing Gentle SA Cleanser, which is geared more towards oily skin. It is a gentle cleanser that contains salicylic acid and ceramides that help maintain your skin barrier. I also like CeraVe’s hydrating cleanser in the winter when my skin is more dry! This is also a very affordable product.
Step three is to tone. It is perfectly fine to tone twice a day, as long as the product you are using is gentle, and your skin can handle it. Toning helps slough off dead skin cells and tighten your pores, which makes you skin look fresh and healthy! I included two different toners because The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toning Solution is much stronger than the eb5 toner. I use the glycolic toner 2-3 times a week, so that my skin does not dry out. Glycolic acid is great for oily skin, it can help clear up blemishes and give your skin a nice glow. If you have dry skin, I would stick with the eb5 lactic acid toner, it is not as harsh, but still does a really great job! Again, both of these are very affordable. Get the glycolic acid here.
Step four is to apply a vitamin C serum. A serum is a great addition to your routine, because it is filled with many beneficial ingredients that can absorb deeper into your skin than a moisturizer. This one from Derma E has vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. Vitamin C has so many great skin benefits including brightening, promoting collagen production, and evening out skin tone. Hyaluronic acid is great to add extra moisture and makes your skin look more supple.
Step five is to apply a moisturizer. A thicker moisturizer is great to use at night so your skin can absorb the extra moisture. The belif true cream moisturizing bomb is super hydrating, but does not feel heavy on the skin. It also has a really fresh scent, I have used this for a few years now and really love it, it is worth the splurge! If you have very oily skin, they also have an Aqua Bomb that is a gel formula, made for oily skin.
The sixth and final step is to apply a facial oil. I have to be honest I just recently learned I was applying this incorrectly. I was using this before my serum and moisturizer. Your facial oil should go on after your moisturizer, because oils can penetrate moisturizers but not the other way around. I immediately noticed a difference when I applied my moisturizer after my serum, it absorbed so much better! This Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil from The Ordinary is a great option if you have oily skin. It absorbs quickly, and helps reduce signs of sun damage and even skin tone, plus it’s super affordable! Get it here.
That’s it! That may be a lot for some people, but I find doing my skincare at night to be relaxing. I have also seen a huge difference in how my skin looks and feels now that I have a great routine!
