Hello!
This week I wanted to share my experience with trying Lush packageless products. Recently I have been trying to make small changes in my life to be more environmentally friendly. Using less plastic is one of those things, so I decided these Lush products would be perfect to try. If you don’t know about the company Lush, they are a brand who prides themselves on making handmade products with all natural ingredients. They also do not test on animals and create their products with the planet in mind. If you want to learn more about Lush you can click here. I also love that you can click on all of their ingredients and it will tell you more about it. I really enjoyed two of the products, but one I would pass on.
I actually went to the Lush store on Earth Day as sort of a celebration, but didn’t get around to taking the photos of the new products until the end of May. I always made some sort of excuse like the lighting was bad or I didn’t have enough time. Oops.
What I ended up purchasing was the Honey I Washed My Hair shampoo bar for $10.95, the Big Conditioner Bar for $12.95, and the Raspberry Milkshake bar soap for $18.95. It looks like the soap I purchased is no longer available, but they have a ton of others. If you plan on getting the shampoo and/or conditioner bars, I recommend getting the square tins to put them it. They only cost $3.95 and will really help extend the amount of use you will get out of the bars. It basically helps keep them from getting wet when you are not using them in the shower. Get the tins here.
So I’ll start with the shampoo bar. This is my favorite product that I purchased that day! I will admit I was a little skeptical and didn’t know what to expect, but I was fully impressed the first time I used it. The scent of this product is honey-toffee, aka heavenly. It claims to give your hair moisture, bounce, and soften it without leaving it heavy, which I have to agree with! My hair has never felt so clean and light after using this shampoo. It also claims that you will get eighty washes out of this bar, we shall see! I used this for a month, but I only wash my hair every three days. So during these four weeks I used the shampoo 10 times. I will say, less is more with this product. You only need a little bit to get a great lather going. To use it, you just have to dampen it under the shower and then rub it on your scalp. Once you get a little on your scalp, it will be easy to lather throughout your hair. This shampoo does contain sulfates, but it is paraben and silicone free.
You can see the bar is shrinking a bit. Honestly, looking at the bar today it still looks pretty big. I may do another update in a few months to let you know how long it lasts!
Next is the conditioner bar. They call it the “Big” bar because it is supposed to give you big volume and shine. It contains coconut oil and seaweed to help condition, and sea salt to give a little texture. This product doesn’t have the best reviews on their website. Most of them say it doesn’t lather or work at all. I have to disagree. Since when does conditioner ever lather? I use this product by dampening it under the shower head, then I put my hand on one side of my hair and run the bar on the other side. Then I do the same on the opposite side. Basically, making sure I get on top and the underside of my hair. You only need to run this from your earlobes down, too. I’ve never really used conditioner on my scalp. It is a little trickier than the shampoo, but only because you can’t really see the product going on. It definitely works for me though, I am able to brush my hair out just fine with a Wet Brush after washing it. I do notice a softness and shine too! I also used this bar 10 times in the four week span.
Finally, is the bar soap. Looking back, I can’t believe I spent almost $20 on a bar of soap. Especially one that only lasted a month. It was a huge hunk of soap, so I definitely thought it was going to last longer. This is the product I would pass on. While it smelled great, I don’t feel like it was anything special. Also, I think it may have dried out my skin a little bit. It definitely didn’t help add any moisture. I purchased a 4 ounce bar for $18.23. I think the fancier soap you get, the more expensive it is. They have some more affordable options online and in-store. You can check them out here. I will say I did have to travel with this, so a couple of times it didn’t get to completely dry out before I had to put it in a Ziplock bag. If you want to try this, I recommend getting one of the more affordable bars. After I took the four week photos, this bar was pretty much done for.
So I will finish with some Pros and Cons for these products.
Shampoo and conditioner pros:
- Great ingredients
- Wonderful smell
- Shampoo leaves my hair feeling light and clean
- Conditioner leaves my hair soft and shiney
- SO easy to travel with when you have the tins
- No plastic bottles
- Easy to use
Shampoo and conditioner cons:
- Sulfates can be known to strip color faster on color-treated hair
I am also curious if these bars will last as long as they claim, but I have no proof of that yet.
Bar Soap Pros:
- Smells delicious
- Made with fresh, quality ingredients
Bar Soap Cons:
- Expensive
- Didn’t last long
- Dried out my skin
- Can be difficult to travel with
So, in conclusion, I ABSOLUTELY love the shampoo and conditioner bars from Lush! I don’t see why anyone should not give these a try! They are actually really fun to use, help the environment, and leave your hair soft and clean. Unfortunately, I would pass on the bar soap, at least the one I purchased. I think there are a lot better options out there that are more affordable and are still made with natural ingredients. Let me know below if you’ve tried these products and what you think, or if you have any questions!
