Hello!
This week I wanted to share some tips with you on how to become a smarter shopper. Since becoming a fashion blogger, I’ve learned a ton about stretching my money and being smarter about what I buy. Here are a few tips to think about before your next shopping trip.
Will it go on sale? If you’re shopping at a familiar retailer, you are probably aware the store runs sales on different things. For example, Target will run a sale on shoes for a week. Usually for me, I want that new pair of shoes after the sale is over. But I have learned, if something is not on sale right now, it will be eventually. Wait for the sale, unless the item is low stock!
Are there coupons? Make sure you check for coupons before you check out! Most coupons are available online or on apps. It could save you some money by simply going to the store’s website and checking for any coupons. You can also check for current coupon codes if shopping online, a lot retailers display them at the top of their websites. I also recommend signing up to get emails from your favorite stores to receive coupons right to your account.
Can I save on shipping? I have to be honest, I hate paying for shipping. Something about buying a $15 top and paying $8 for shipping rubs me the wrong way. Amazon Prime has ruined me. Many stores have an amount you have to reach before you get free shipping. While I don’t suggest spending more than you need to get free shipping, maybe you wait until you need a few different things and buy them together. I also like taking advantage when retailers run specials on free shipping on any order. Target offers free shipping on any order purchased with a RedCard. If you don’t have a Target RedCard, I highly recommend getting one. You can get the debit version which comes directly out of your bank account, which also allows you to save 5% on all of your orders and get free shipping online! Many stores also offer free shipping to your closest store, and then you go and pick it up. This is a great option to save, too!
Is there a more affordable option? Is there a super expensive pair of shoes you have your eyes on? How about a designer handbag? Chances are, there is a very similar product out there, that is way more affordable. Or, if you still want the designer brand, try stores like TJMaxx or DSW that have designer brands at a discount! Say there are a pair of tan booties you like at Nordstrom, but they are too expensive. Try googling “women’s tan booties” and take a look at what you can find. Many stores actually copy popular designs, altering them slightly, and sell them at a more affordable price point.
How many ways can I wear it? This question has become the most important one I ask myself when buying something. Before I purchase it, I think of at least two or three different ways I could wear it. I used to be horrible at buying statement pieces that I could only wear one way, which is extremely impractical. I would wear it once, maybe twice, and then it would sit in my closet forever. I have started buying more things that are neutral colors, and that can easily be layered.
How do you feel in it? Sometimes I hate trying on clothes in store, but I know it’s important to ensure it is a comfortable fit, and that I feel good in it. When you try on that piece of clothing, does it make you smile? Does it make you feel confident? If the item isn’t hitting these points, you probably shouldn’t buy it. Don’t try to convince yourself it will work if you aren’t 100% sure you like it!
I hope you find these tips helpful the next time you go shopping! Remember that if something isn’t on sale at the moment, it probably will be soon. Always check for coupons, and save them to your phone before you go shopping. Don’t forget to use them either! It is more practical to buy items that you can wear more than one way, and you shouldn’t buy something you have doubts about. If there is an item you are really loving, but it is out of your budget, there is probably a dupe out there for it!
