Hello!
This week I wanted to share with you how I apply my foundation, concealer, and powder to get the perfect base makeup. I will also share some tips on how to make your makeup look natural. It is important to have a good base when applying makeup so that your powder products will apply and blend well on top!
Step 1. Apply a primer before your foundation
I feel that applying a face primer before foundation is important so that your foundation will go on smoothly and last all day. I use the Laura Geller Spackle Hydrating primer. Even though I have normal to oily skin, I still like to have a really moisturized face before applying makeup. The primer costs $32 which is a little pricey, but you get 2oz (two times more than most primers), and it is worth it!
Step 2. Apply foundation
My favorite way to apply foundation is with a damp beauty sponge. My favorite is the Sonia Kashuk sponge which comes in a pack of two for $10. You can also use a brush if you prefer, but I think the sponge gives a more airbrushed look. I work in sections, dotting a little bit of foundation on my face and then blending it out. I usually start with my cheeks, nose, forehead, and then chin. It is very important to blend the foundation along your jawline, under your chin, and a little bit into your hairline so that you are not creating a line where people can see where you applied foundation. Another spot people commonly miss is up close to their ear and on the jaw right below your ear lobe. Make sure you blend everywhere really well with your sponge! The foundation I used was the L.A. Girl Pro Matte Foundation in the shade Bisque.
Tip: If you have a really red blemish, try applying some concealer underneath your foundation with a small brush.
Step 3. Apply under eye concealer
Applying concealer underneath your eyes helps cover dark circles and brighten your face. I apply a generous amount in a triangle shape swiping downwards. Remember to really blend out your concealer evenly so you don’t see a line where you applied it. If you want fuller coverage, you can blend it out with a brush. I prefer a sponge because it looks smoother and blends better. The concealer I use is the Maybelline Better Skin concealer in the shade Light.
Step 4. Set under eye concealer with powder
After you’ve applied your under eye concealer you will need to set it with powder so it doesn’t crease or move around. My favorite way to do this is to dip my damp beauty sponge into my pressed powder a few times, and then dab underneath my eyes where I applied concealer. The powder I like to use is the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless pressed powder in the shade Translucent. You can also use a dense brush to set your concealer.
Step 5. Conceal blemishes and spots
I have found the best way to conceal small blemishes is by applying a little concealer directly to the point of my beauty sponge and then going over the blemish. If you have a very angry blemish, you can apply concealer using a brush first, and then blend out the edges with the sponge.
Step 6. Set the rest of your face with powder where you will apply other powder products
The last step to get the perfect base is to apply powder where you will apply powder products such as contour, bronzer, blush, and highlight. I also recommend applying powder anywhere you have applied concealer to cover a blemish or spot. I apply powder to my cheek area, forehead, and chin. I avoid my nose and the pores next to my nose because I tend to get dry there. It is also a good idea to apply some powder anywhere you get oily throughout the day.
I hope you find this helpful! You can shop the products I used below. Please note I always wear a sun screen underneath my foundation to protect my skin! I apply this before the primer.
