Hello!
In celebration of Earth Day this year, I wanted to write a post showing my support for sustainable, eco-friendly clothing brands. Doing my part in being eco-friendly, has always been something very important to me. I wish more people cared, and did their part in protecting our planet. I feel that sustainable clothing brands are something not many people know about, so I wanted to bring light to them. Earth Day is Sunday, April 22nd. I want to challenge you to do one new thing to help our planet, big or small.
I purchased some clothing items from eco-friendly brands, and I want to share them with you. I will also give a little bit of info on these brands, and what they offer. I tried to find brands that were on the more affordable side. Many of them use organic cotton, and/or recycled fabrics.
The first brand is called Threads 4 Thought. They offer Women’s and Men’s clothing, included tops, bottoms, dresses and active wear. Their price range is $18 for a tee, up to $98 for a bomber jacket. I purchased two of their Ezra Tees they come in 10 different colors. These are a vintage wash pocket tee. These tees are so soft, and are great for creating a cute knot in the front. The coral haze and storm colors were calling my name. They costs $34, but I saved 20% because I purchased two things. They usually have coupon codes you can use on their site, this week they have 40% off your order for Earth Week! So my total ended up being $54.40. It was difficult for me to decide on only a of couple things, they have so many great pieces on their site.
Their Story: They started with t-shirts in 2007, and now have a broad range of items that are produced in a responsible way, and support sustainable initiatives. They are committed to decreasing the pollution the fashion industry makes. You can read more about their story, and shop their site through the links above.
The next brand I found is called Known Supply. They have women’s and men’s basic tees. Their prices range from $26 for a muscle tank, to $68 for a sweat shirt that is in collaboration with Almond Surfboards. You can also add customized text to any of their tees. There are tags sewn on the inside of the shirts with the handwritten name of the person who made it. I purchased a fitted crew tee in grey (it comes in three other colors) for $28, and a Raglan Crew in white (comes in two other colors) for $30. These are great staples to have in your wardrobe, I love a white tee with a pair of jeans. It has a subtle high-low hemline and the cutest sleeves! You also get free shipping on your first purchase.
Their Story: Known Supply is an amazing brand that provides meaningful work to undeserved populations. They focus on bringing a face to the person who created your clothes. You can shop them, and learn more through the links above.
The third brand I purchased from is Alternative Apparel. This is one of the more well known sustainable fashion brands. They have men’s and women’s clothing, as well as accessories. They sell mostly basic type clothing, including tops and bottoms. Their prices range from $28 for basic t-shirts, to $248 for a denim jacket. I purchased a t-shirt dress from them for $48, but if you sign up for their email list, you will get 20% off your first order. So, I only paid $38.40, plus shipping is always free! Returns are free, too. If you also use Ebates, they have 4% cash back on their site. They also have a tab on their website called “Brands We Love” where they feature many other ec0-friendly clothing, jewelry, and even home brands.
Their Story: Alternative Apparel is part of the Fashion Revolution, which aims to create clothing in an ethical and sustainable way globally. They ensure their factories are clean and safe for their workers, most of their factories at WRAP-Certified. WRAP is an organization that is committed to promoting safe, humane, and ethical manufacturing around the world through certification and education. You can learn more about Alternative Apparel’s efforts to be ethical and sustainable by clicking the link above.
I found so many great brands with the mission to help our planet be more green, who also have a focus on ethical work conditions. Here are some to name a few:
Siizu– They make sustainable fashion, as well as handcrafted jewelry. They donate 10% of their profits to planting trees, how cool is that? They also have natural skincare and fragrance. Siizu also offers free shipping.
PACT Apparel– PACT probably has the best pricing out of all of the brands I looked at. Their clothing mainly consists of basics for men and women. They also have underwear made from 100% organic cotton. PACT uses certified organic cotton, and fair trade fabrics. You can also get 20% off your first order, and free shipping when you spend $59.
ABLE– ABLE has clothing, shoes, handbags, and jewelry for women. I absolutely love their jewelry. ABLE is special because they hire only poverish women from around the world to create their products. This is an amazing brand with an amazing cause. You can also get $10 off your first purchase of $40 or more.
Fair Indigo– This brand has a large variety of women’s, men’s, and baby clothing. They use sustainable fabrics, and fair trade ethics. The prices are not terribly high, and you can get free shipping with orders over $75.
For Earth Day this year, I would love to see everyone do at least one new thing that will help our planet. That one thing could be purchasing something from one of these fashion brands. Here are some other things you can do to help our planet:
-
- Go paperless on your credit card statements
- Skip the receipt at the gas station/store
- Buy a reusable water bottle, see below
- Buy reusable straws, here are the stainless steel ones I use
- Buy things second hand
- Start recycling
- Use less water
- Use paper bags instead of plastic
- Install low-flow shower heads and faucets
- Use CFL or LED lightbulbs
- Avoid styrofoam
In the county I live in in Indianapolis, curbside recycling is only $6.50 a month, you pay $19.50 every three months. That is less than the cost of Netflix or Hulu, so no excuses people! They will also drop off your recycling bin at your house. If you live in an apartment, or curbside recycling isn’t available where you live, there are many public recycling bins placed around the city. This link is for the website Earth911, you can type in what you are looking to recycle and your zip code, and it will tell you if you are eligible for curbside recycling, or where there are public recycling bins. This applies to ANYWHERE in the United States. $6.50 is such a small price to pay each month, to make a big impact on our planet. It saddens me more people don’t try to be green, or think that things like landfills or global warming don’t affect them. Think about the many generations of people to come. Think about all of the horrible plastic we have in our oceans. We only have one livable planet! So, let’s help take care of it. Leave me a comment below, or comment on any of my posts and let me know what you plan to do to be more eco-friendly for Earth Day.
